Adoption Procedure

At the Humane Society of Port Jervis,
there is a 24 hour "cooling off" period
between the time you apply
to adopt an animal and the time
you take your new friend home.

We do this to avoid "thinking with your heart"
instead of "thinking with your head."

That 24 hours gives you time to consider
all the changes that will be occurring
in your life once you assume
the responsibility of pet ownership.

When you are considering adoption,
we will ask you to fill out a
background questionnaire.

We ask questions such as your name,
address and phone number,
whether you've had or currently have
pets and a Veterinary reference.

Yes, we do check your references
because we want to make sure the
pet you want will fit into
your family perfectly and that it will
have a good and loving home with you.

If you'd like to adopt a pet
but just didn't see one that you liked
the day you were at our shelter,
you can still fill out the form.

You may also ask to be put on our
"want list" for the type of pet
that you were hoping for.

You may have a long wait for
a specific type or breed, but
good things come to those who wait!
